Last night here at BSP I released nagios-plugins (1.4.14-1), which has a couple of fixes and enhancements. For more information, see the changelog.
The main change may, that with this version, the package should be installable on non-linux archs, where iputils-ping is not available. The downside of using inetutils-ping is, that its behavior is <a target=new" href="http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=565137">different from iputils-ping. As result of this, check_ping will timeout much often, even if there isn’t any problem and you will have false positives. As suggested long ago, at least on this archs, you should consider to replace the use of check_ping with check_icmp.

We ordered a couple of the new HP DL160 G6, cause they can be equipped with a lot of RAM. Unfortunately it’s always the same with HP and the bandnew ProLiant 100 series … the driver for the NICs is missing/too old in the latest stable debian release. The DL160 G6 is shipped with a Intel 82576 GBit NIC, which isn’t recognized by Lenny, see also #522922.
I installed the system with another NIC installed (not really, but this is a way it works :) and wanted to get free the PCI-X slot again. So I did backport dkms and downloaded the latest igb driver. A short look into /usr/share/doc/dkms/HOWTO.Debian did advice me the way to create the DKMS driver package. Just after a couple of minutes I did roll out the igb-dkms_2.0.6_all.deb to the target maschine(s).
On the target systems I just installed dkms, the DKMS package and appropriate linux-headers and … sim, salabim … there was the interfaces. :)

Today I uploaded a new nagios-plugins package to unstable. At first I thought I will wait for the next upstream release, but after the announcement to release soon, the months passed by. While we skipped the last stable release due the lenny freeze, there are a couple of bugs fixed in the latest svn snapshot and within the package itself:

[...]
* new upstream
– check_http doesn’t enforce port (Closes: #494835)
– check_http –onredirect=sticky follows using the same IP address
(Closes: #502529)
– Fixed buffer overflow in check_ntp/check_ntp_peer (Closes: #528686)
– Fixed check_mrtg returning UNKNOWN instead of OK (Closes: #335871)
– Fixed check_by_ssh interpretation of quotes in -C parameter
(Closes: #425312)
– Fixed coredump from check_nt when drive not found (Closes: #521097)
– Removed -n option in check_smtp’s help and usage output (Closes: #525307)
– Fixed check_icmp –help output for warn and critical thresholds
(Closes: #530553)
– Fix potential buffer overflow in check_snmp – enforce MAX_OIDS limit
(Closes: #460405)
[...]
* add trailing $ to check_httpname, thanks Daniel Pocock (Closes: #524629)
* add informations into README.Debian how to use plugins (Closes: #525168)
* add check_nscp which uses the default port of NSClient++ (Closes: #528262)
[...]

So I thought it would be comfortable for the users to upload the svn snapshot instead to wait longer for a stable upstream release and leave the bugs unfixed or incorporate the bugfixes into latest stable release, which have to be sorted out again with the next stable release.
If there are no show stoppers, a backport will appear hopefully short before debconf at backports.org.

While we are at it, yes I’m at debconf too from 23th to 31th. Hopefully see you there.

If you using policyd-weight you might want to give it a try, since its active development stoped. If you are annoyed by too much spam, it maybe a good idea as well.
Please have a look on postfwd.cf, there is no default config provided, since the configuration depends heavily on your environment. But maybe you have a look at /usr/share/doc/postfwd/examples, there is what you expect.
If you have any comments, send a mail to the maintainer or if there are bugs I didn’t spotted yet, please fill one!
In case I don’t respond quit fast, maybe I’m in the delivery room or anywhere else in the hospital or something like that, so please give me some extra time.
In case there are no big issues, I plan to upload the package to unstable in a reasonable time.

This Tuesday Robert Felber released a new upstream version. It is a (local) security bugfix (and some minor fixes) which was reported on Sunday by Chris Howells to the Debian Security Team (as well as to other vendors). Today DSA-1531 was released.

Right from the DSA:
“… created its socket in an insecure way, which may be exploited to overwrite or remove arbitary files from the local system.”

So please update you systems if you use this package asap.

While we are at policyd-weight… there is one bug open (#471645) where I’m unsure if I want to fix it, cause only stable is effected and the problem can be solved by providing a adjusted array of rbl in the config file. Should I ask for inclusion directly into stable? But it’s a really minor issue. Or try to get 0.1.14.15 uploaded to volatile? I’m really unsure and suggestions are welcome.

Last week I did again some work on nagios-plugins. After the announcement of Dann Frazier to upload NMU to fix a trivial bug, I thought it’s time again to give some extra care to the package. So I prepared 1.4.11-2 fixing the important bugs and uploaded it. I also commited some minor fixes to the svn, so these issues will get fixed by the next upload.

Since the development of policyd-weigh stalled and unfortunately maybe get stuck, I was looking for an alternative, which maybe found with postfwd. It’s quite flexible but it also will take more time (and care!) to get a reliable configuration, which maybe effective as policyd-weight (still) is right now. While checking the dependencies for postfwd I noticed that Net::DNS::Async isn’t available in Debian (yet). So I decided to create a package starting with dh-make-perl, join the Debian Perl Group and let it review. Damyan Ivanov was so kind to review and upload it, Gregor Herrmann did also give some much useful hints. Thanks to both!

And yes, I also found time to step forward with NM, since I was overloaded the last weeks with usual work and life. Thank to my AM to be so appreciative.

Since some weeks I’m really busy, private and at work. It’s going into the end of the year and everybody is in hurry. There seems also coming some changes for our family down the road in the future, but more maybe later. Additionally one months ago Santiago Ruano Rincón did surprisingly turn up as my AM. We started fast, but I got stuck at P&P part 1 with the License comparisons, cause actually I’m so busy at work and with my family, that I can’t concentrate enough late at night, when trying to work on the papers. For example the graphviz license is completely overwhelming me. My hope in the last time was some bigger timeslots at the weekends, but they got smashed by my family and/or work issues. I hope Santiago is not getting annoyed by me and I can find hopefully some free time on holidays or in the first weeks next year.

Anyways … Christian Perrier started a review and translation process of ipplans debconf templates by the debian-i18n contributors. The templates was in really bad conditions, most of it was copied over from gallery2 and I did know that they wasn’t so good. Thanks for all your work, when the process is over I’m proud to include your really nice work.

Two other packages got updates. php-suhosin got new upstream release after months which fixes the broken perdir/.htaccess support. Unfortunatly I missed the release (cause there is no announcement list and there was no watch file) unless Raphael Geissert did leave a note. I integrated the new VCS and homepage stuff also and formorer did fix some minor issues. So we can hopefully upload now (when it arrives testing) the first package to backport.org and sleep little bit better, when using PHP on stable.
nagios-plugins also got updated. Since Seanius seems really busy (like allways), nobody did really took care of the package. In October it got two CVE which was solved via NMU by the testing-security team, also two new upstream releases where available. So I droped the obsolete patches, integrated new once, did make the new shiny lintian a bit more happy, some minor fixes and queued the package to Seanius. ;)
You can expect both packages on backport.org soon. My other (comaintained) packages will get updated to latest policy and VCS/homepage guidelines in the near future. Actually I’ve to prioritize what to do with the left time slots. :/

Yesterday I was going through the plugins and widgets, if there are any updates or such. I realized again, that updating of plugins (and maybe searching for the relocated download source) makes me mad. Also testing and switching back is annoying much.
So I decided to package plugins and widgets I use. Since some plugins and widgets are not maintained long enought for any debian release cycle or getting obsolet with new wordpress releases, I decided to maintain the packages outside of the debian project. Anyways … some people are also scared about the security situation of wordpress. I guess this isn’t much better for wordpress extensions.

Next pity, some extensions or any equivalents aren’t available for wordpress 2.3 (yet). If you run multiple blogs via the stock debian package and wan’t to make use of the new wordpress version in any of your sites, you have update all at once … which maybe not a way you want to go. I decided to repackage wordpress 2.3.0 as wordpress23, which allows you to install wordpress (<<2.3.0) and wordpress23 at same time.

If you want to use debian plugin, widget or theme packages or use these from your normal wordpress installation (/usr/share/wordpress) with wordpress23, you need to symlink the dirs.

For example:

# mv /usr/share/wordpress23/wp-content/plugins/ /usr/share/wordpress23/wp-content/plugins.orig
# mv /usr/share/wordpress23/wp-content/themes/ /usr/share/wordpress23/wp-content/themes.orig
# ln -s /usr/share/wordpress23/wp-content/plugins /usr/share/wordpress/wp-content/plugins
# ln -s /usr/share/wordpress23/wp-content/themes /usr/share/wordpress/wp-content/themes

Remember that package updates of wordpress or wordpress23 may overwrite parts of /usr/share/wordpress/wp-content/[plugins|themes] in such situation. BE CAREFULL!

You can get the stuff via apt-line:

deb ftp://ftp.cyconet.org/debian wordpress main non-free contrib

Or directly from: http://ftp.cyconet.org/debian/archive/wordpress/

The actual package list is:

wordpress-plugin-af-extended-live-archive
wordpress-plugin-ald-spa
wordpress-plugin-all-in-one-seo-pack
wordpress-plugin-exec-php
wordpress-plugin-google-sitemap-generator
wordpress-plugin-landingsites
wordpress-plugin-lightbox-2
wordpress-plugin-now-reading
wordpress-plugin-page-links-to
wordpress-plugin-photopress
wordpress-plugin-related-posts
wordpress-plugin-rolemanager
wordpress-plugin-sideblog
wordpress-plugin-spam-karma
wordpress-plugin-stats
wordpress-plugin-ubernyms
wordpress-plugin-utw
wordpress-plugin-utwgooglesitemaps
wordpress-plugins
wordpress-widget-category-cloud
wordpress-widget-samsarin-php
wordpress-widget-utw-cloud
wordpress-widgets
wordpress23

If you want a plugin or widget included and it makes sence to do so, drop me a mail, where to grab. Be aware that UTW isn’t supported since wordpress 2.3 anymore. A tag system was included into wordpress and you need to search replacements for all the nice UTW extension!

Stay tuned!
