Bayreuth Festival – Online streaming of “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg”

Actual I’m involved into a project which maybe of interest for you if you like opera particular when you are a Richard Wagner enthusiast.
Since long time, the waiting period for obtaining tickets increases a lot. At the moment I think you have to wait around 8 years, which is a worse.
Time changes also at Bayreuth Festival, they seems to refocus their audience. Looks like the aspects of huge waiting list and new medias influenced that process.

This year the opera “Die Meistersinger” is broadcasted online under the slogan “live dabei” (live there) via the great thing called “Internet” and to a public viewing area in Bayreuth, which is a premiere in both cases. So if you don’t have a ticket for the Festspielhaus and not in a position to make use of the public viewing but interested to have a look at the opera, you may want to check if your system matches the technical requirements and give it a try.

    The obvious question: No Ogg{Theora/Vorbis}?

This out of the way: I know some Wagner enthusiasts who will be delighted to hear about this.

  • As far as I know not yet (at least this year).

  • nazi shit…

  • sento: I don’t know what you are talking about and how it is related to this post.

  • It says “BUY TICKET” and “LOGIN”. Doesn’t sound like “free”, neither in the sense of speech nor beer.
Actually, its 49 Euros. For crappy quality. What happens if your connection breaks down, and/or their server gets overloaded?
Get a real life ticket to the Opera house across the street.

  • Maybe you have noticed, that there are two events. The “public viewing” is for free in sense of free beer. The streaming is not for free, cause there is a significant amount of invest needed to realize the whole setup.

The quality is subjective and yes, it is a different to a real life performance.
I don’t know, what for a connection you are talking about, but the stream is broadcasted via satellite uplink to one of the world leading broadcasting company. So I don’t see any risk neither for the connection to the broadcasting center nor for the streaming server.

If you think you are fine with getting a real life ticket, good luck. The actual waiting period is in range from five to ten years. So the live streaming and the public viewing are for example a good chance for those who unfamiliar with Wagner operas and don’t want to invest years of waiting and a significant amount of cash for getting tickets for the Festspielhaus.
