Yesterday my ordered HP Thin Client T5725 arrived. The clue is, Debian sarge is and no moving parts (no noise) are inside. It’s a really nice thin client and it can be used as Surfstation out of the box. There is also a “HP Connection Administrator” which can manage ‘Citrix‘, ‘rdesktop‘ and ‘XDMCP‘ connections.
After taking a short overview, I decided to update to etch. This was a kind tricky, cause packages did need to update in correct order to save the HP packages. Due the switch from Xfree to xorg with etch, the graphical frontend for configuring the X server didn’t work anymore, but in my environment this is no issue.
So now I’m really happy with a HP Thin Client and bleeding edge software on it, for xdmcp use. ;)

Can you post which ethernet driver the 5725 uses? I have the t5135 and it uses the via_rhine driver. Wondering if the much more powerful t5725 uses it as well. I’m thinking about getting the t5725 for use with pfsense.
Dunno what’s used with the shipped system, but with my updated etch system, via_rhine is used as well.
# grep eth0 /var/log/dmesg
eth0: VIA Rhine III at 0xec103000, 00:19:bb:d4:xx:xx, IRQ 20.
eth0: MII PHY found at address 1, status 0×786d advertising 05e1 Link 45e1.
eth0: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0×45E1
Can you provide full dmesg? Thanks.
Have a look at t5725-dmesg!

Hi Tom,
> is it fanless??
Yes it is.
> can i replace a notebook drive inside
No you can’t. There is neither room for it nor a socket to connect. But there is a upgrade for flash available, which leaves you the option to have 1GB flash (it doubles the disk space).
> upgrade it to a full linux PC
The device is shipped with a tight sarge installation plus some HP modified/distributed packages. I upgraded it to etch and installed also pulseaudio for streaming audio from (Linux) Terminal Server to the client. This fits the shipped diskspace.
> they want surf, look youtube, thunderbird mail and use gnomeicu thats possible?
Tree things …
1st: This wouldn’t fit your diskspace, even with flash upgrade.
2nd: Flash lifetime is limited by write cycles per block, if you write extensive to flash, it will be damaged fast.
3rd: With the shipped 256 MB RAM and using the installed firefox, it has much trouble with using more than one or two tabs. The box slows extremly down. So you don’t want do that.
It is designed as thin client to connect to remote resources … using it for other things might cause troubles.
Maybe you will have a look at EBox 2300SX or EBox 2300 if it fits more your needs. More informations can be found at Axel Beckert Site even in german.
Hi can you tell us how to set this baby up to use original soft and XDM (xdmcp)?
The manual states that linux version must support xdm so how to use it? the uuber 1337 software it has doesnt make a peep on xdm protocol.
This works out of the box with the T5725 and T5735 as far as I remember. You need to make your clients to accept network connections via xdmcp. Since xdmcp is really bandwidth consuming, I migrated to NX.
but i got the older version t5135 not 5725 5735… so i wasted money? any way to make it use xdcmp? flash image? Help im lost!
Dunno, but if you have a look at http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/en/WF06a/12454-12454-321959-338927-89307-3341342.html, there is writen: Protocols: RDP, ICA.
So .. you have lost! Dunno about upgrading the flash, ask you vendor! :)
Not a peep on upgrading/modding/hackin the image?
I’m neither a HP support guy nor do I know anything else as is published in official HP docs regarding _THIS_ model.
hi,
the t5725 is a nice machine, but i search for a way to get a german etch running on it. i talked with a supporter from hp and he said that there is a way to install a german language package. do someone know something about that?
regards, xeno
Upgrading to etch should not such a big problem. Changing the language works like usual on debian (etch). No need for additional language pack so far.
Just add the following to your sources.lists and there you go:
deb ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/tcdebian/ t5725 main
deb ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/tcdebian/ t5735 main non-free
deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ etch main contrib non-free
